Fidelity Growth Partners Europe, a private equity division of mutual fund manager Fidelity International, has hired former Index Ventures associate Chris Barchak as a principal.

He was responsible for pioneering Index’s cleantech investment activity and previously worked as director of European business development at software company BetweenMarkets.

Helen Barton also recently joined the Fidelity’s European growth team as finance director, coming from 3i where she was a finance and portfolio executive in the buy-out business.

Simon Clark, partner of Fidelity Growth Partners Europe, said, “I am delighted to welcome both Chris and Helen to the team.  They bring with them a great deal of experience that will be an asset as we continue to build on the success of the last 10 years of growth investing in Europe.

“Europe has many exciting and fast growing software, clean technology, internet commerce, financial technology and marketplace companies that need backing to become global businesses.  We are increasing our investment pace to support these businesses and help them become world class companies,” he added.

Earlier this month, the firm picked up £100m (€111.8m) for its first fund dedicated exclusively to investments on the continent, reflecting what it sees as the maturity of the European venture capital market in the territory.

The former US division of Fidelity’s venture capital operations recently spun out to form Volition Capital. Volition has taken the 20 US portfolio companies it managed at Fidelity and will co-manage six European investments with Fidelity Growth Partners Europe.
